[2008-04-29] Implementing Enterprise Integration Patterns using Open Source Frameworks
Robert Thullner recently finished his master-thesis with the title "Implementing Enterprise Integration Patterns using
Open Source Frameworks". In his thesis he is refering to the EI Patterns described by Hohpe and Woolfe. Robert analyses a
set of leading OS frameworks in this domain (Mule, Apache ActiveMQ, Service Mix and Camel). He defines a set of scenarios
that are implemented with various (combinations) of technologies to evaluate and demonstrate the capabilities of the
specific technology or mix of technologies. Finally he categorises the frameworks and gives hints on implementation
best-practices.

[2008-03-28] Nachhaltige IT: Veranstaltung im Rahmen der OCG
Angesichts der massiven Herausforderungen, der wir als Gesellschaft in Form von Energiekrise und Klimawandel (sowie
anderen Problemen die auf mangelnde Nachhaltigkeit zurückzuführen sind) gegenüberstehen, habe ich mich entschlossen, eine
Neuorientierung des Open Source Arbeitskreises der OCG vorzuschlagen und den Arbeitskreis um die Thematik "Nachhaltigkeit
und IT" zu fokussieren. In diesem Konzept findet eine Veranstaltung in der OCG statt, in dem ich mich auch auf zwei
Gastvortragende freue: DI Schmoll vom Umweltbundesamt "Green IT---Nur ein Marketingschlagwort?" und DI Meixner (IBM)

[2008-03-12] Neue Diplomarbeitsthemen
Es gibt ein neues Diplomarbeitsthema, das sich mit den Möglichkeiten auseinandersetzt, die wir als Softwareentwickler
haben um Anwendungen (Server, Client) effizienter und leistungsfähiger und damit "ökologischer" zu gestalten.
Softwareentwicklung hat in der Vergangenheit oft unter dem Druck schnelle Lösungen zu bieten die Effizienz ausser Acht
gelassen. "Ein weiterer Server wird das Problem schon lösen" war eine gängige Annahme. Dies sollte nicht der Weg der
Zukunft sein, v.a. nicht im Sinne der Probleme vor der wir durch wachsenden Resourcenmangel und Klimawandel stehen. Wege
Effizienz und Energieverbrauch in komplexen Anwendungen zu messen, sowie geeignete Strategien diesen zu minimieren
stellen die Herausforderung dieser Arbeiten dar.

[2008-03-02] Software-Engineeing Sommersemester!
Das Sommersemester beginnt und ich freue mich schon auf die nächste Softwareengineering und Projektmanagement Runde. Ich habe
meine Hausaufgaben auch schon größtenteils erledigt. Für meinen Teil der Vorlesung/Übung gibt es eine Reihe an enhanced Podcasts
für die "Basisinformation". In den Vorlesungen werden wir anhand von praktischen Beispielen dann die dort im Selbststudium
erarbeiteten Inhalte vertiefen. Natürlich sind die Podcasts für alle zugänglich, nicht nur für Studenten meiner Vorlesungen. Es
sind zur Zeit die ersten vier Vorlesungsteile online, die restlichen drei werden in den nächsten Tagen folgen.

Process-Engines auseinander: Besonders im geschäftlichen Umfeld ist es häufig eine Herausforderungen
komplexe Geschäfts-Regeln effizient abzubilden und aufgrund dieser Regelbasis Entscheidungen zu
treffen. In diesem Artikel beschreibe ich Konzepte und Open Source Rule Engines, deren Abgrenzung zu

[2007-10-16] Travel to Hongkong and Indonesia
I will leave on Oct. 20 to Hongkong, will attend there the ICEBE conference. After a week in
Hongkong I will spend nearly three weeks in Indonesia preparing a conference and working on Open
Source activities and for ASEA Uninet. I will visit universities in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta,
Bali and Sumatra. Internet connection is typically pretty bad, so do not expect to reach me until
end of November.

Mustern der Systemintegration auseinander. Dabei setzt ich mich auch mit Apache Camel und Codehaus

[2007-09-11] Woche der Informatik: Podcast
Ich bin ja aktiv in der Organisation der Woche der Informatik involviert. Unter anderem erstelle ich
den Podcast zur Woche der Informatik (siehe Link). Es würde mich freuen, wenn dieser für viele
interessant ist, um über das reichhaltige Programm auf dem Laufenden zu bleiben. Unter anderem
Berichte ich von den verschiedenen "Tagen" (Medien, Geschichte, Forschung...), es wird aber auch
eine eigene Berichterstattung über die Very Large Databases dank der freundlichen Unterstützung von
Prof. Klas geben.

[2007-08-11] Neue Zitate: "Antonio Damasio" und "Descartes' Irrtum"
Damasios' Buch "Descartes' Irrtum" ist ein sehr wichtiges Buch, weil es (endlich) medizinisch
fundiert mit den eigenartig Dualistischen Ideen bricht, die uns Descartes beschert hat. Diese
dualistischen Ideen leben leider in simplifizierter Weise in verschiedensten religiösen Ideen weiter
und haben offenbar auch die Art geprägt wie wir mit Krankheit und deren Behandlung umgehen, ganz zu
schweigen vom Bild des Menschen (z.B. des homo oeconomicus, das wir (im Westen) haben. Das Buch ist
vielleicht streckenweise nicht ganz leicht zu lesen. Evt. bietet sich auch Andy Clark (s.u.)
alternativ an, da er viele Gedanken Damasios aufgreift und weiterdenkt.

[2007-08-09] New Quotations from Andy Clark...
Finally I found the time (holiday *g*) to enter some new quotations. This time from the
excellent book by Andy Clark: "Being There". Andy Clark discusses "old and new" concepts of AI,
the mind, brain and body relation. For me it is actually an intellectual follow up to Antonio
Damasio, and is definitely a suggested read for everyone interested in the mind/body problem and
in the question how our "intelligence", "knowledge" and behavior is related to our body and
particularly our environment.

[2007-07-30] Neues Diplomarbeits/Praktikumstheme: Enterprise Integration mit Open Source Tools
In der letzten Zeit sind etliche neue OS Frameworks veröffentlicht worden, die sich mehr oder
weniger mit Systemingration beschäftigen. Aufbauend auf den Enterprise Integration Patterns von
Gregor Hohpe sollen in dieser DA Frameworks wie Mule, ActiveMQ, Service Mix, Camel usw. auf
deren Möglichkeiten sowie geeignetes Zusammenspiel untersucht werden. Zu diesem Zweck sollen
auch geeignete Szenarien gefunden werden.

O/R Mapper wie Hibernate wurden in den letzten Jahren gerne als "Persitenz-Standard" verkauft.
Leider bergen Hibernate & ein hohes Maß an Komplexität. Auch bietet sich aus anderen Gründen
"full blown" O/R Mapping nicht für alle Applikations-szenarien an. In diesem Artikel diskutiere ich
verschiedene Probleme im O/R Umfeld sowie Alternativen zu klassichen O/R Strategien.

I changed the newsfeed to be delivered via Feedburner by several reasons: First feedburner offers
some features out-of-the-box that I needed to implement manually (support for several feed formats
for example), plus allows me to figure out how many people are subsribed to my feeds... So please
change your subscription (actually the old should work as well, but gets redirected.)

[2007-07-04] New Workshop Paper: "In-Time Project Status Notification for All Team Members in Global Software Development as Part of Their Work Environments"
In this workshop paper, that will be presented at the International Conference on Global
Software Engineering (ICGSE2007) in Munich, Germany (August 27-30) we describe issues in global
software development and how in-time and role-based notifications of significant project events
can support different roles in a software development process (like developers, testers,

[2007-07-02] New Bacchelor Thesis: "Evolution of Data-Warehousing and Mining"
Peter Parapatics finished a very interesting bachelor thesis about the evolution of data-warehousing
and data-mining. He analyses the changes in the technical capabilities and understanding of
data-management over the last decades and the effects on what can be done and what actually is done
with data. He also analyses the influence of web technologies and modern architectural approaches
like event-driven architectures and data stream management.

[2007-06-22] Diploma Thesis Robert Fischer: "Motivations and Challenges in Designing a Distributed Log Management Framework"
Robert finished his excellent diploma-thesis discussing a not so popular, maybe forgotten issue in software engineering and maintenance: logging. Actually a proper logging-infrastructure and strategy can contribute a lot to a stable and secure IT environment. Robert discusses modern frameworks and suggests new ways to integrate logging streams. He also suggests guidelines in developing new systems and implemented an own integration framework based on the XMPP messaging standard.

I am currently participating the 8th AOSS symposium. The target
of the conference is to establish and discuss the usage of OSS
in Asian countries. I am invited as speaker for two speaches

[2007-02-06] New Quotations from Daniel C. Dennett's "Freedom Evolves"
I like Daniel C. Dennett's way of writing, and from my point of
view he is one of the most interesting contemporary
"intellectual". However, I think his book "Feedom Evolves" is
probably not one of his best. There are, however, some
interesting thought in it, no doubt, but it really appears, that
Dennett has not so much to contribute to the discussion about
free will as he announces in the beginning. Still, enjoy!

Richard Dawkins is in my opinion one of the leading scientists of
our time. Not only is he a well known and important evolutionary
biologist, he is also one of the top-scientists, that are able to
wrote books readable for a broader audience. As I believe, that many
scientists still misunderstand that complex issues excuse a complex
style of writing, authors like Dawkins or Sagan (just to name two)

[2007-01-20] Diplomarbeit von Birgit Dippelreiter: "Einsatz von Groupware in und zwischen Unternehmen..."
Birgit Dippelreiter hat sich in ihrer Diplomarbeit mit
verschiedenen Arten von Groupewarelösungen auseinandergesetzt und
diese im Einsatz in verschiedenen Unternehmen verglichen. Dazu
wurden auch Befragungen in Unternehmen durchgeführt. In der
Diplomarbeit beschreibt stellt sie dann auch die erwarteten den
unerwarteten Effekten gegenüber.

[2007-01-15] New Publication: Instant Collaboration: Developing a Framework to Support new Patterns of Team-Cooperation
At Webist 2007 I will present a paper introducing a new Collaboration
Framwork: Communication and collaboration is supported by a multitude
of different (client) applications and backend systems. At the same
time, new patterns of collaboration between knowledge workers arise:
people want to communicate in-time, share resources, keep track of
their issues and yet do not want to be unnecessarily disturbed in
their concentration. We analyse several systems and approaches to
support team-collaboration and finally introduce our understanding of
?instant collaboration?. In our research we support first patterns
with a middleware and client-side prototype. The system is built upon
proven systems for (instant) messaging, communication and
repositories, and suggest a system that allows support for new
work-patterns, yet integrates seamlessly into existing IT and
workgroup infrastructure and company policies.

[2006-12-06] New Journal Publication: Testing Event-Driven Business Processes
Today's business climate requires to constantly evolve IT strategies for responding to new
opportunities or threats. While the fundamentals of IT like reliability, availability, security and
manageability are still crucial, rapid results are mandatory for business success. These
business challenges can be solved by acting with agility ? striking the proper balance between the
introduction of leading-edge technology and the pragmatic application of IT. In this paper, we
introduce a testing framework for business solutions dealing with complex and dynamic IT
environments. Our framework enables a test-driven development and adaptation of business
processes in order to implement flexible and reliable business solutions. We compare our testing
framework with model-driven development approaches and show how we applied it to an event-
driven process management platform called SARI (Sense And Respond Infrastructure).

[2006-11-27] Neue Publikation in Infoweek: iBatis Framework
In der aktuellen Infoweek Ausgabe (Nr. 21) gibt es wieder einen Artikel von mir: diesmal setze ich mich mit dem Apache Framwork "iBatis" auseinander. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Persistenz-Framework, das im Gegensatz zu den "üblichen Verdächtigen" wie Hibernate SQL zentriert arbeitet. Dies ist für viele Einsatzbereiche besser geeignet und wesentlich einfacher zu erlernen und zu beherrschen.

[2006-11-22] New publications: conference and journal
Two new conference contributions are presented these days at the iiWAS conference: the first is dealing with "project health" in Open Source peojects, the second one is a case study of a complex information-system migration. Eventually we also published a new journal article about testing of (complex) event-driven business processes.

[2006-10-13] Diploma Thesis from Thomas Zwanzinger "Interactive Previews in Document Workflows"
Thomas Zwanzinger recently finished his diploma thesis dealing with interactive previews in document workflows.
In e-Government and e-Business applications, tyically documents are part of the workflow. These documents are filled partly automatically (from databases, ERP systems, and so on), and partly by manual interaction.
Thomas evaluates Workflow systems that support document workflows and implements an own system using open standards like XForms.

Some maintenance work was necessary updating the homepage generation scripts. The introduction and photo was updated as well as some links to university. Additionally I integrated the RSS/Atom feeds, that are available on several places of the website better: (link in the header), hence modern browsers like Mozilla should be able to handle those better.

[2006-09-14] Neues Diplomarbeitstheme: Evaluierung von Ereignisverabeitungs-Systemen
Im Rahmen unserer Forschungskooperation mit Senactive, wollen wir bestehende Ereignisverarbeitungssysteme (kommerziell und Open Source) evaluieren.Im Rahmen der Arbeit soll eruiert werden, was "state-of-the-art" ist, wie unsere eigenen Systeme und Konzepte hier mitspielen, und ob Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Projekten Sinn machen würde.
Die Diplomarbeit/Praktikumsarbeit soll letztlich hinter die "Hochglanzprospekte" blicken und Performance, Usability, Flexibilität, Dokumentation und typische Anwendungsszenarien beleuchten.
Der Vergleich sollte idealerweise auch mit Benchmarks begleitet sein, und könnte auch im Rahmen einer Gruppenarbeit (Praktika) erledigt werden.

In dem Schweizer IT Magazin "Infoweek" erscheint in der Ausgabe 15 der dritte Artikel meiner Artikelserie über wichtige Apache Open Source Projekte: Diesmal stelle ich die relationale Datenbank Derby vor. Dabei handelt (es sich besonders für Java-Entwikcler) um ein sehr interessantes Projekt.
Derby zählt zu den leistungsfähigsten Java Datenbanken und kann sehr einfach in eigene Projekte integriert werden. Mehr zum Thema gibt es demnächst auch im SE-Blog.

As one of my research focuses is Software Engineering, and I realised, that it is difficult to stay in touch with recent developments in my field and also to communicate the relevant ones between colleagues, within the workgroup and to students, I initiated a Weblog dealing with "Best Practices in Software Engineering".
I am very happy, that I am not doing this alone, but with the very competent support of Josef Schiefer, Heinz Roth, Stefan Biffl, Dietmar Winkler, Markus Demolsky, Rupert Meinl and Szabolcs Rozsnyai, who will write contributions from their point of view. It was a LOT of work to select and rework about 6.4GB of RAW photos I brought home from San Francisco. I hope you will enjoy the selection. It was a great experience anyway: starting with the city, the gay parade "Pride 2006", and days north of San Francisco (Sonoma County, Mendocino, Fort Ross, Tomales, ...). [2006-07-24] Server Problems
Unfortunately we had a severe power-outage again last week in the night from thursday to friday. Eventually the server that hosted my website did not come up again. So I needed to reinstall and re-configure the whole system which created unfortunately a significant downtime. Now the new server is running and the problems should be (hopefully) gone.

[2006-04-18] Diploma Thesis: 'Efficient indexing and searching in correlated business event streams'
Szabolcs Rozsnyai finished his excellent diploma thesis dealing with difficult issues in mining of large event-databases. These events come from business processes or other systems like ERP, Messaging Middleware, Communication systems and so on.
Szabolcs thesis did not only deal with backend, storage and indexing issues, but also with a complex web-based query interface targetting end-users. With this work, he lays the foundation for future steps in more complex event mining and visualisation strategies as well as product developments in this field.

A set of new citations are online. First of all some citations from the great book "Blink" from Malcolm Gladwell. This book gives some good insights into how we make decisions and how we "work" with information.
The second set of citations are in german, from the classic text "Der Baum der Erkenntnis" from Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela about the biological foundations of cognition.

[2006-04-04] Open Source Business Konferenz OSCON: Web-Entwicklung
Kommenden Montag (10. April 2006) findet im Rahmen der OSCON Konferenz der von mir organisierte Track "Web-Entwicklungs Frameworks" statt. Wir freuen uns exzellente Entwickler und teilweise Mitarbeiter an wichtigen OS Webframeworks als Referenten begrüssen zu dürfen. Vertreten sind unter anderem folgende Technologien: PHP, Ruby on Rails, Java Server Faces (myFaces), Python/Zope. Nach einer Vorstellung der Frameworks sowie Diskussion der Einsatzgebiete findet eine Podiumsdiskussion statt, in der das Publikum zu reger Teilnahme aufgefordert ist! [2005-11-30] Abschlussveranstaltung der OCG Open Source Aktionstage 2005
Gestern fand der letzte "Aktionstag" des Open Source Arbeitskreises der Österreichischen Computergesellschaft in Kooperation mit dem IN:N der TU-Wien Fakultät Informatik statt.
Das Thema "Softwareentwicklung und Web-Frameworks" fand mit mehr als 80 Teilnehmern regen Anklang. Leider war der Saal zeitweise zu klein, aber in Summe war dies natürlich ein erfreulicher Abschluss dieser Vortragsreihe.
Die Präsentationen der Veranstaltung sollten sich in wenigen Tagen zum Download auf den OCG Webseiten finden (siehe Link).
Die Teilnehmer des OCG Arbeitskreises hoffen auf ähnlich erfolgreiche Aktivitäten im kommenden Jahr!
